History of the Working Party

The Working Party on Signed English (WPSE) was set up in 1980 by schools for the deaf in southern England in response to growing pressure for the use of sign in the education of deaf children. From the beginning deaf people were involved in all stages of selection and generation of the signs to their final approval for inclusion in the manuals. No sign was adopted without their agreement. The use of SE has spread into many other regions and attitudes to its use in deaf education have responded to the developing use of sign language in schools.
