Sign Modes

This area encompasses English, British Sign Language (BSL), Signed English (SE) and Signs Supported English (SSE). BSL is a language in its own right, having its own structure and grammar distinct from - and different to - those of English. BSL, the language of the Deaf community, is a visual-gestural language and English, the language of the hearing community is an aural-oral language. SE and SSE are both modes in which Spoken English is accompanied by sign, SE has a sign for every word while SSE has a sign only for some of the key words.
